André Michaux International Symposium

Belmont Abbey College, the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden and Gaston Day School have formed a partnership to call attention to plants in the local environment, notably those documented by French botanist André Michaux during the last years of the eighteenth century. The overall goals of the association are:

  • To sponsor an international symposium on the work of André Michaux to be held May 15-19, 2002 featuring three days of talksg, a nationally recognized featured speaker, workshops, field trips and opportunities for networking among participants and a weekend of re-enactment of 18th century history at the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden.
  • To initiate research on the Magnolia macrophylla, first authored by André Michaux and listed as a "sensitive species" in North Carolina.
  • To encourage academic studies on André Michaux, his discoveries, his interactions with notable people of his time, and his place the history of science.
  • To develop an integrated curriculum on Michaux to be used at Gaston Day School and to be made available to public schools.
  • To establish a Michaux Trail at the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden through a wooded area near where he walked in the 1790s.
  • To engage in activities which promote André Michaux as a genuine hero, who cared for the environment.
   

Le Collège de l’Abbé Belmont, le Jardin Botanique de Daniel Stowe et l’École Préparatoire de Gaston ont formé une association pour attirer l’attention sur les plantes locales notamment celles documentées par le botaniste André Michaux dans les dernières années du dixhuitième siècle quand il travaillait dans ces endroits. Les buts globaux de l’association sont:

  • De parrainer un colloque international sur André Michaux qui aura lieu du 15-19 Mai 2002 avec trois journées de conférences, des sorties éducatives, des occasions de dialoguer parmi les participants, ainsi qu’un week-end de réconstitution du dixhuitième siècle au Jardin Botanique de Daniel Stowe.
  • D’encourager des recherches académiques sur André Michaux, ses découvertes, son rapport à des personnages historiques, et sa position dans l’histoire de science.
  • De commencer des recherches sur le Magnolia macrophylla, décrit pour la première fois par André Michaux et considéré comme une espèce sensible à la disparition dans la Caroline du Nord.
  • De développer un programme scolaire sur Michaux pour l’École Préparatoire de Gaston qui serait accessible aux écoles publiques.
  • D’établir une piste Michaux au Jardin Botanique de Daniel Stowe et parmis autres endroits boisés qu’il a parcouru pendant les dernières années du dixhuitième siècle.
  • De participer dans les activités qui promeuvent André Michaux comme un des premiers champions de l’environnement
