The Carolina Plants of André Michaux

In 1979 Dr. David Rembert Jr. of the University of South Carolina prepared a study of André Michaux's plants native to North and South Carolina that was published in CASTANEA, the Journal of the Southern Appalachian Botanical Society.

Dr. Rembert's authority for the list of Michaux plants native to the Carolinas the Manual of the Vascular Flora of the Carolinas by Radford, Ahles and Bell, University of North Carolina Press, 1968. This book is also the authority for plants listed on these web pages and is indicated by the letters RAB followed by page numbers.

As Dr. Rembert noted in CASTANEA, André Michaux was especially active in the Carolinas and named nearly 300 plants native to the two states. In addition Michaux named many, many other plants not found in the Carolinas, but this list is limited to his Carolina plants.

The André Michaux International Symposium gratefully acknowledges the active assistance of Dr. David Rembert Jr. in preparing these lists of Michaux's Carolina plants for the web.
